Republic of the Marshall Islands Seeks UN Recognition of Testing Impacts
Nations have gathered at the United Nations in New York to review the 40-year old Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which spells out commitments for halting the spread of nuclear weapons. In addition to supporting efforts to halt further weapons production, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) has enlisted regional support in proposing that the meeting also show international recognition of testing impacts.
Speaking before the NPT plenary meeting last Thursday, RMI UN Ambassador Phillip Muller told the Parties to the NPT agreement that the 67 nuclear tests conducted in RMI took place with UN approval through two UN resolutions, passed in 1954 and 1956, after the UN rejected petitions by traditional Marshallese leaders.

Marshall Islands Takes On Difficult UN Climate Negotiations: Ambassador offers ideas to jump-start finance progress
The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) is taking an increasingly visible role in UN climate negotiations, which is working slowly towards finalizing a new global treaty on climate change. At an average of just 2 meters above sea level, RMI is one of the world's most vulnerable nations to climate impacts – like sea level rise and erosion.
Climate negotiations resumed last week in Bonn, Germany. With UN assistance, RMI was represented at the recent talks by UN Ambassador Phillip Muller, and Mr. Kaminaga Kaminaga, a climate officer with the Office of Environmental Policy, Planning & Coordination. Three more rounds of talks are now scheduled before a final meeting during December in Mexico.

RMI Supports Copenhagen Accord on Climate Change But Demands A Legal Treaty
RMI has conveyed its political support for the Copenhagen Accord, the rushed and controversial political agreement offered at last December’s global climate negotiations in Denmark.
But RMI, which faces the risk of losing its statehood to rising seas, also linked its support to a demand for progress this year towards the adoption of a legally-binding treaty of sufficient ambition to ensure the survival of the most vulnerable nations.
