IN HONOR OF MARSHALLESE WHO SERVED & ARE SERVING
Two Marshallese recruits graduated last Friday from the U.S. Navy's only boot camp located at the Naval Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois.
Taylor Jesse, 18, and Byron Lanwi, 20, joined the 970-member graduating class in the the Navy's traditional ceremony, Pass-In-Review, which honors each Sailor's hard work and dedication to a new way of life.
In his address to the graduates, the Navy's senior officer, Admiral Gary Roughead said the Sailors had tremendous opportunities ahead of them."They are part of something that is bigger than themselves and they, individually, can make a difference in the world that we live in."
Jesse will be continuing with the US naval civil engineering program in New England, Connecticut. Lanwi is assigned to the U.S. Navy medic training program in Chicago.
Both families of the new Sailors currently reside in Oregon, according to Horgan Korok, a Marshallese community representative.
Today, November 11, as Veterans are honored throughout the U.S., we pray for those who have served and are serving in the defense of freedom, including hundreds of Marshall Islanders. SALUTE!

From Marshall Islands to Iraq, Strike Soldier Works Hard to Accomplish Mission

Imagine lying on a beach covered with white sand and lined with gorgeous coral reefs beneath the most pristine ocean water in the Marshall Islands in Micronesia. Spc. Terrence Muller knew that life all too well while growing up on this island, which consists of 27 flat-laying atolls and three islands scattered across the region in the Pacific Ocean.
Muller, who loved the tropical humidity, enjoyed watching the coconut trees sway to and fro with wind in his hometown of Majuro Atoll, the capital city. He often found himself fishing with his father, diving with his friends, sailing canoes or just simply catching a breeze and watching the waves smack the shore of the beach.

A bill to "provide supplemental ex gratia compensation to the Republic of the Marshall Islands for impacts of the nuclear testing program of the United States, and for other purposes" was reported and placed on Senate Legislative Calendar under General Orders, Calendar No. 976, on September 16, 2008. The cost estimate, completed last week by the Congressional Budget Office(CBO), follows:
S. 1756 would amend the Compact of Free Association Amendments Act of 2003 and the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000. The legislation would appropriate $4.5 million annually (plus adjustments for inflation) over the 2009-2023 period to supplement health care in communities affected by the U.S. nuclear testing program. In addition, under S. 1756, workers employed at nuclear test sites would be eligible for compensation and medical benefits.
