MARSHALLESE FILM EXPLORES YOKWE SPIRIT

Yokwe Bartowe= Yokwe Bartowe is the story of a young girl named Lijiamao who is kidnapped by an evil demon bird. The ancient Marshallese legend of the 'kwolej' bird dictates that its main mission in life is to create sorrow and misfortune in the world.

The new Marshall Islands' film exploring the Yokwe spirit of the Marshallese culture and people opens at K & K Theaters in Majuro on January 29.

Yokwe Bartowe, a full-length feature in Marshallese with English sub-titles, is the second for fledgling Microwave Films. It was shot on location in Majuro Atoll and Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, and in Springdale, Arkansas.

Lyel Tarkwon and Martha Horiiuchi, students at the College of the Marshall Islands (CMI) in real life and in the movie, play the lead characters of Bartowe and his girlfriend. Netha Gideon returns from her role in Ña Noniep and stars as Lijimu the Sorceress, and Nica Wase stars as Madam Kwolej, the human form of the evil kwolej bird. Headlining also are Jefferson Paulis and Billma Melson as Lijiamao, Bartowe's kidnapped little sister.

These and other volunteer actors are from local organizations, including the College of the Marshall Islands, the Majuro Cooperative School, and the Women's Athletic Club (WAC).

The film was directed and produced by Jack Niedenthal and Suzanne Chutaro, with original screenplay by Niedenthal.

The film is expected to run for two weeks, and the DVD release may be in early March.

All proceeds from Yokwe Bartowe will go the Majuro Cooperative School.

BRAVO's 56th Birthday and its Radioactive Legacy

Glenn Alcalay, a former Peace Corps volunteer on Utrik in the Marshall Islands, now an adjunct professor of anthropology at Montclair State University in New Jersey, has studied the impact of U.S. Cold War nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands. In the following article, he relates the story of the BRAVO H-bomb test and its aftermath:

John Anjain, then-mayor of Rongelap Atoll in the Marshall Islands, told me in 1981 how a man working with the Atomic Energy Commission in February 1954 stuck out the tip of his index finger - about a half-inch - and said, "John, your life is about that long."

Marshall Islands: Job Loss, Decline in Salary Levels Continue

Hardship levels are rising in the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and out-migration continues due to erosion of earnings and job loss. Although there was a slight increase in FY09 earnings, real average annual earnings show the impact of the weakened economy, according to a report issued this month by the RMI’s Economic Policy, Planning and Statistics Office (EPPSO).

Inflation, declining levels of salaries and wages since FY97, and high unemployment are the cause, said EPPSO Director Carl Hacker.

RMI Supports Copenhagen Accord on Climate Change But Demands A Legal Treaty

RMI has conveyed its political support for the Copenhagen Accord, the rushed and controversial political agreement offered at last December’s global climate negotiations in Denmark.

But RMI, which faces the risk of losing its statehood to rising seas, also linked its support to a demand for progress this year towards the adoption of a legally-binding treaty of sufficient ambition to ensure the survival of the most vulnerable nations.

The number of Marshallese women players to be recruited from the US will depend on the locally available talent that is identified through Micro Games tryouts that began in Majuro on February 2 and funding availability.
