MARSHALL ISLANDS COMPETES IN OLYMPICS 2008

RMI at Olympic=

The Republic of the Marshall Islands made its first Olympic appearance in Beijing on Friday evening, August 8, 2008.

During the parade of countries, RMI olympic committee official Waylon Muller was the honorary flag bearer, accompanied by runner Haley Nemra. Both were dressed in colorful costumes representing the Marshallese tradition and culture.

They were followed by the four other RMI athletes -- Jason Anju, Roman Cress, Jared Heine, and Julianne Kirchner -- and RMINOC officials.

Heine will compete in the 100-meter backstroke on Sunday evening, August 10. On Friday morning, August 15, Cress will run the men's 100-meter, and Nemra the women's 800-meter. Kirchner will swim in the women's 50-meter freestyle Friday evening. Jason will compete Friday morning, August 22, in Taekwondo's men's 80kg Class.

A delegation, composed of Kili/Bikini/Ejit officials, attended the hearing at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit hearing on August 7. The appeal asked for reversal of decision in the Bikini/Enewetak lawsuit brought against the United States. The lawsuit sought a just and fair compensation from the impacts of Cold War nuclear testing and the "taking of lands", but in August 2007, Judge Miller of the US Court of Federal Claims granted the U.S. motion to dismiss the case.
